Hi, how can I find my husband’s phone location if he lost it?

Welcome to the community! It’s definitely stressful when a phone goes missing. Fortunately, both major smartphone platforms have built-in tools designed specifically for this situation.

For these methods to work, the location services and the “find my phone” feature must have been enabled on the device before it was lost, and the phone needs to be powered on and have a data connection (though some newer features can find phones that are offline). You will also need his account credentials to log in.

Here are the standard ways to locate a phone:

For an Android Phone:

This uses Google’s “Find My Device” service.

  1. Open a web browser on any computer or another phone and go to android.com/find.
  2. Sign in using the Google account (the Gmail address) that is linked to your husband’s phone.
  3. Once signed in, the service will try to locate the phone. If successful, you’ll see its location on a map.
  4. You’ll also have a few options:
    • Play sound: Makes the phone ring at full volume for five minutes, even if it’s set to silent.
    • Secure device: Locks the phone with its PIN, pattern, or password and lets you display a message on the lock screen with a contact number.
    • Erase device: Permanently deletes all data on the phone (this should be a last resort, as you won’t be able to locate it afterward).

For an iPhone:

This uses Apple’s “Find My” service.

  1. Using a web browser, go to Find Devices - Apple iCloud.
  2. Sign in with his Apple ID and password.
  3. After logging in, you should see a map displaying the location of all his Apple devices.
  4. Select his phone from the list of devices. From there, you can:
    • Play Sound: Causes the iPhone to play a sound to help you find it if it’s nearby.
    • Lost Mode: This remotely locks the phone with a passcode and lets you display a custom message with a phone number on the Lock Screen. It also tracks the phone’s location.
    • Erase iPhone: This remotely erases all of the information on the device. After you erase it, you can’t track it anymore.
